Upgraded Email - Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)
If you cannot send email and you notice an error like this:
SMTP Error: [554] 5.7.1 Account <email> has been blocked from sending due to abusive activity. Please update password and (re-)enable 2FA to be unblocked
This means that either your account was compromised or that the emails you're sending are not inline with our outbound email policy.
To restore access and be able to send emails again you need to do 2 things:
Change your password
Enable Two-factor Authentication (2FA)
What is 2FA?
Two-factor Authentication is when you need to use your phone to get a text message or enter a code from another app to login (in our case we use an authenticator app)
Login at https://secure.mail-websites.ca
Click 'My Account' (left menu)
Enter a new password, then confirm the password then click 'Edit Account' to save
Google Authenticator (good if you have a Google account because you can login to the app with your account, but you can use it without a Google account as well)
Twillo Authy (works with standard text messages or WhatsApp)
Login at https://secure.mail-websites.ca (use your full email address and password)
Click 'My account' (left menu)
Scroll down to 'Two-factor Authentication'
Click 'Enable 2FA'
Now click the 'QR Code' button
Now on your phone, open the Google Authenticator app (or other app)
Tap the "+" (bottom right)
Tap 'Scan a QR code'
Line up the green box over the QR code
Once it activates, you'll see an entry in Google Authenticator for your email and a 6-digit code that resets every 30 seconds
Take that code from your phone and enter it back in the browser in the section 'Verify 2FA' > 'OTP' then hit Enter on the keyboard
If applicable, if you are using Outlook or another email program on your desktop computer, your password will not work anymore
You need to create a 'Device Password' as follows
Still in the browser, under the 'Device passwords' section, just enter a name for the password (eg. your firstname)
Then click 'Create'
Your device password will be displayed (only once! so make sure you record it)
Now reconfigure your desktop application like Outlook to use this password
